Climbing permit

Mt Ararat can only be climbed if you hold a valid climbing permit and you are accompanied by a guide.

The permit is issued by the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism and a fee of 50 USD must be paid to the Turkish Mountaineering Federation.

You may apply for the permit at the Turkish Embassy or Consulate in your country or submit the application via a licenced agency. The latter may be a more efficient way. Please leave enough time (at least 2 months) for the application to be processed.

The permit will be sent to the travel agency (unless you applied for it yourself at an embassy) and will be checked by the jandarma in Doğubayazıt along with the proof of payment before the climb. Registration with the jandarma is done by your guide.

The following information is needed to submit the permit application:

  • Name [surname and given name(s) as in the passport]
  • Date of birth
  • Place of birth
  • Nationality
  • Place of residence
  • Passport:
    • number
    • date of issue
    • authority/place of issue
    • date of expiry
  • Address of the nearest Turkish Embassy or Consulate

You also have to specify the planned dates of your climb. The permit is valid only for the time period indicated in the document.
